Job Title: Mechanical Inspector

General Summary:
Leelanau County is seeking a qualified Mechanical Inspector to join our team. Under the supervision of the Building Official, the Mechanical Inspector conducts on-site inspections across the county to ensure compliance with state codes and ordinances designed to protect public health, safety, and welfare. Responsibilities also include reviewing construction plans, issuing compliance notices, maintaining inspection records, and performing plan reviews (if appropriately licensed).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following functions are representative of the role. The employee may be required to perform additional duties as assigned.
Conduct on-site inspections of new and existing structures to ensure compliance with State mechanical codes.
Examine construction materials and methods for conformity with environmental, energy, and accessibility standards.
Review or inspect plans, specifications, and blueprints of new construction or remodels for code compliance.
Approve permit applications when all requirements are met.
Seek voluntary compliance when violations are found; recommend corrective actions, issue notices, and perform re-inspections.
Investigate complaints regarding code violations and conduct follow-up inspections as needed.
Prepare detailed inspection reports and maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, complaints, and related correspondence.
Advise contractors, homeowners, developers, engineers, and architects on code requirements and the permit process.
May issue summonses and testify in code violation cases.
Stay current on laws, code updates, construction practices, and industry developments.
Review site plans for compliance with applicable codes.
Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Employment Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
A minimum of four (4) years of experience in building trades, inspection, construction, code enforcement, or plan review.
A six-month orientation period is required.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
State of Michigan license in at least one discipline (mechanical, electrical, or plumbing).
Registration as an Inspector with the Michigan Department of Labor (PA 407-2016).
