Job Description/Responsibilities

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is seeking to hire a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Black/Africana Cultural Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences. This position is part of a hiring cluster for faculty contributing to the Community-Oriented Digital Engagement Scholars (CODES) Program . CODES is a general education pathway emphasizing community-engaged digital humanities methods, especially for students who are Pell-eligible, first-generation college attendees, or from underrepresented backgrounds. This cluster hire aims to strengthen commitments to antiracism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success.

Initially, the assistant professor will teach two courses per semester. The regular load includes six courses annually, with four to five in CODES and one to two in their home department, though course assignments may shift later. Faculty are expected to engage in research and scholarship that advance their field. Service commitments include collaborating with other CODES faculty and community partners to develop curriculum and support student needs, as well as mentoring CODE Scholars in their academic and professional development.

Minimum Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field, evidence of teaching experience, and a scholarship record appropriate to academic experience. ABD applicants may be considered for a one-year interim instructor position. Candidates must have experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to supporting underrepresented students' success and holistic development. A dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion, along with engagement in social justice and inclusive pedagogy initiatives, is essential.
